FAQ

What Are Terpenes?

Sometimes called essential oils, terpenes are a subgroup of the volatile fraction of plants. There’s an estimated 30,000 terpenes found throughout nature, each one with slightly different aromatic and effect profiles.

Some plants contain higher terpene concentrations than others — for example, mint, cannabis, eucalyptus, lavender, and rosemary all have high terpene concentrations.

There are several different types of terpenes — defined based on the number of carbon units in their structure. Monoterpenes are the simplest, most common, and have the lowest evaporation temperature. Diterpenes, triterpenes, and sesquiterpenes fall next in line.

As terpenes evaporate and enter the nasal cavity, they’re picked up by the olfactory receptors to register what we perceive as an “aroma.”

How Much Should I Dilute My Terpenes?

Terpenes should never be used in pure concentrated form. Terpenes must be diluted to around 5% of the total volume or less to avoid causing irritation or damage to the skin.

These compounds are powerful — a little bit goes a long way.

Does This Blend Contain Any Additives?

No. Our Strawberry Banana terpene blend contains nothing but pure terpenes. None of our terpene extracts contain any preservatives, flavor additives, or stabilizers.

Terpenes work as their own preservatives and flavorings — there’s no need to add anything to these extracts.

Do Finest Labs Terpenes Contain CBD or THC?

No. We use a method called hydrodistillation to make our extracts. This process removes all the non-terpenoid components of the extract — including CBD, THC, and any other cannabinoids.

How Long Can I Store Terpenes?

Terpenes have a long shelf-life when stored correctly. Terpenes will last for 2–3 years without any noticeable degradation of effects but will start to become less potent after this point.

Incorrectly stored terpenes may lose their potency much more quickly.

For optimal shelf-life — store your terpenes in the same airtight container they arrive in, keep it in a cool, dark, and dry location, and avoid opening the bottle unless completely necessary. You can also extend the shelf-life further by keeping your terpenes in the fridge.

Are Terpenes Psychoactive?

While there are some terpenes in nature that have psychoactive effects (such as Salvinorin A), none of our terpene extracts contain any psychoactive constituents.
